What is 2-hydroxy-benzonitril? What are its uses?

2-hydroxy-benzonitril, also known as o-cyanophenol, is the English name 2-hydroxy-benzonitril. It is a grayish-white to light brown powder-like organic compound with the chemical formula C7H5NO and a molecular weight of 119.1207. Its CAS number is 611-20-1. It remains stable at room temperature, with a flash point of 109.58℃ and a density of 1.225. It is a key intermediate in the field of biochemistry and is widely used in the pharmaceutical, pesticide, and plastic industries.

I. Chemical Properties and Composition:

The molecular structure of salicylaniline consists of a benzene ring, a hydroxyl group (-OH), and a cyano group (-CN). The hydroxyl group is located at the secondary position (position 2) of the benzene ring, while the cyano group is directly attached to the benzene ring. This structure endows it with unique chemical properties: the hydroxyl group provides certain polarity and reactivity, while the cyano group acts as a strong electron-withdrawing group, influencing the electron distribution and reaction pathway of the molecule. Its purity is usually measured by the content of the active ingredient. Industrial-grade products can reach 98% content, which complies with industry standards. The high purity characteristic makes it more controllable in synthetic reactions.

II. Core Application Scenarios:

As an intermediate, salicylanilide is a key raw material for the synthesis of various complex compounds. In the field of medicine, it is involved in the synthesis of the active ingredients of certain anti-inflammatory drugs and anti-tumor drugs; in the pesticide industry, it can be used to prepare the parent structure of new herbicides or insecticides; in the plastic industry, its derivatives can improve the heat resistance or mechanical properties of polymers. In addition, it can also be used as a reagent in analytical chemistry for the detection or separation of specific substances.

III. Usage Method and Precautions:

Salicylanilide is usually stored and transported in powder form. It should be kept away from strong oxidants, strong acids or strong bases to prevent dangerous reactions. Protective equipment (such as gloves and goggles) should be worn during operation, and it should be carried out in a well-ventilated environment to reduce the risk of inhalation or skin contact. The recommended storage temperature is within the normal temperature range, and it should be kept away from fire sources and high-temperature environments. Its flash point (109.58℃) indicates that there may be a risk of combustion at high temperatures, and strict safety regulations must be followed.

IV. Technical Advantages and Industry Value:

Compared with traditional intermediates, the advantage of salicylanilide lies in its designability of the molecular structure: by adjusting the reaction conditions, other functional groups can be deliberately introduced, thereby synthesizing more superior downstream products. For example, in pharmaceutical synthesis, its high purity (98%) can reduce side reactions and increase the yield of the target product; in the field of pesticides, its derivatives may have lower toxicity and higher environmental friendliness. Moreover, domestically produced salicylanilide (originating from China) has achieved large-scale supply and is available for retail, providing convenience for small and medium-sized research and development institutions.
